Shirakawa-go Tour from Takayama: Bus, Tour or Private Car
By Takayama Gifu Team · Updated · 13 min read

You don’t need a Shirakawa-go tour from Takayama to see the village. The Nohi bus leaves from beside Takayama Station, costs ¥2,800 one way, and takes about 50 minutes; book a seat and you have the day on your own clock. A tour earns its price in four cases: you want a guide who can explain the gassho houses, you want Gokayama’s Ainokura village in the same day, you are going for the January 2027 light-up (reservation-only, and the regular route buses won’t get you in), or you’d rather not fight for seats in a peak week. This page puts the bus, the Nohi sightseeing bus, the guided days and the private cars side by side, with the fares and rules we checked on 4 November 2026. If you’re starting in Nagoya, read the Nagoya version instead.
Quick answer
| Nohi bus yourself | Nohi sightseeing bus | Guided day tour | Private car | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cost | ¥2,800 each way | ¥9,000 adult, ¥7,000 child, direct from Nohi (partners price it separately) | Per person; check today’s price | Per car or per group; check today’s price |

| Time in the village | As long as you want | Shirakawa-go plus Ainokura; no guide on board | A guided walk plus free time | You decide |
| Best for | Almost everyone | Two villages in one day without a car | First-timers who want the stories | Families, groups, deep winter, anyone with bags |
| Weak point | Reserved buses sell out in peak weeks | Fixed timings | Short village time | Price for one or two people |
The Nohi bus from Takayama
Nohi Bus runs the Takayama to Shirakawa-go line from the Takayama Nohi Bus Center, the brown building at the east exit of Takayama Station. The adult fare is ¥2,800 one way, the ride is about 50 minutes on the expressway, and Nohi’s English page counts 16 round trips a day; most of them continue to Kanazawa or Toyama, so the bus you board at Takayama may carry a different destination on its sign. The first departure is 7:20, arriving at 8:10, which puts you in Ogimachi before the coach parties.
The catch is seats. Nohi’s Japanese timetable marks the Takayama to Shirakawa-go runs as reservation-based (予約制), and its English page says some runs are reservation-only and the rest also take walk-ups. Treat every run as needing a booking in Golden Week, August, autumn weekends and the whole snow season. Reservations open one month ahead on Japan Bus Online (発車オ~ライネット, open 5:00 to 2:00) or by phone on 0577-32-1688 between 9:00 and 17:00, and the bus centre counter sells what’s left. Two more things from Nohi’s own notices: the late 19:00 departure from Takayama doesn’t run on weekends, holidays, 13 to 15 August or 29 December to 3 January; and in snow or when the village car parks jam, delays of two hours or more happen. Don’t plan to step off the last bus and straight onto a train out of Takayama.

The Shirakawa-go buses use bays 3 and 4; the centre is open 6:30 to 19:00 and has coin lockers at the front, with sizes and prices on the luggage page. The bays, the city loops and the other lines are on the getting-around page.
Two passes to be careful with. Nohi’s own Area Free Ticket (¥8,000 for three days) says in plain Japanese that it cannot be used on the reserved Takayama to Shirakawa-go runs, so it won’t carry you there on a busy day. And the nationwide JR Pass is a rail pass: it doesn’t cover any Nohi bus. The pass that does cover the Hida train and these buses is on the getting-here page.
Tours from Takayama compared
Nohi’s own sightseeing bus, Shirakawa-go and Gokayama Ainokura. This is the one product that adds something the public bus can’t: Ainokura, the smaller gassho village in Toyama’s Gokayama, which on your own means a second bus company and a change at Shirakawa-go. It leaves the Nohi Bus Center at 8:30 and is back at 15:50, about seven hours, for ¥9,000 per adult and ¥7,000 per child of 6 to 12 when booked with Nohi. Minka-en open-air museum entry and the shuttle to the Shiroyama observatory are included; no guide or assistant rides along, so it’s transport plus tickets. It runs daily, with one winter quirk: the Minka-en closes on Thursdays from December to March, and the bus still goes (you get a small gift instead of a refund). You can also leave the bus at the Shirakawa-go terminal around 15:00 and continue to Kanazawa on your own. Book up to three months ahead on 0577-32-1688, or compare it on Klook’s Shirakawa-go and Gokayama bus trip from Takayama and KKday’s Shirakawa-go and Ainokura sightseeing bus, which sell the same seat in your language; the inclusions and price on the day are on each listing.
A guided day with a walking guide. GetYourGuide’s day tour from Takayama to Takayama and Shirakawa-go meets at 9:00 outside the JR Takayama Station ticket gates with an English-speaking guide, walks Takayama for about an hour and a half with Takayama Jinya’s entry included, then rides to Shirakawa-go for the lookout and a guided descent through the village. Lunch isn’t included. It’s the right pick if you’d like the history told to you and don’t mind a short village stay.
Private, with a guide. GetYourGuide’s private Shirakawa-go day trip from Takayama with bus tickets is about 7.5 hours with your own guide, the return bus, and entry to the Wada and Nagase houses and the Minka-en; it meets at the tourist information centre by the station, and the per-person price falls as the group grows. GetYourGuide’s private Takayama and Shirakawa-go day adds a car and driver with hotel pick-up within 5 km of the station, Takayama Jinya, the morning market and the old town before the village. Viator’s private custom full-day tour of Shirakawa-go from Takayama lets you set the route. Partner prices move with the date and the group size, so we print none; the live page has today’s.
One way to Kanazawa through Shirakawa-go
Most of the Shirakawa-go buses continue to Kanazawa, so the village works as a stop on the way out of Takayama. Takayama to Shirakawa-go is ¥2,800 and Shirakawa-go to Kanazawa another ¥2,800, against ¥4,200 for the through ticket, so the stopover costs ¥1,400 extra and two bookings. Toyama is the same trick: ¥2,800 plus ¥2,400 instead of ¥3,800. Both legs are reservation-based, so book them as a pair with a three- or four-hour gap. Your luggage rides with you and sits beside you in the village, which is fine for a backpack and miserable with two suitcases; forward the big bags from Takayama to your Kanazawa hotel the day before (the services and cut-off times are on the luggage page). The Takayama-Hokuriku pass that covers the Hida and these buses in one price is on the getting-here page.
The 2027 light-up from Takayama
The 41st Shirakawa-go Light-up runs on four evenings: Monday 11 January 2027 (a public holiday) and Sundays 17, 24 and 31 January, 17:30 to 19:30. The organiser, the Shirakawa-go Tourist Association’s light-up committee, runs it as an entirely reservation-based event: no reservation, no entry, and nothing is sold on the day. Takayama is the natural base, 50 minutes away, and three of the five ways in start here.
- Nohi Bus’s light-up services. Nohi is one of the five highway-bus operators allowed to carry visitors in. Its seats are web-only, on 発車オーライネット or Japan Bus Online, with no phone sales, and whether the observatory ticket is included depends on the plan. Sales opened at 14:00 on 13 October for 11 January, 19 October for 17 January, 26 October for 24 January and 2 November for 31 January, so by the time you read this, check what’s left.
- Your own or a rental car with a reserved slot at the Midashima car park: the second sale opens on 1 December 2026 at 13:00, ¥7,000 per car for 1 to 5 people and ¥10,000 for 6 to 10, entry from 15:00, all cars out by 20:00, no observatory ticket. The organiser’s rule is blunt: studless tyres on every car.
- A taxi or charter with a reserved slot, the same process; the car’s driver needs the slot, so book the charter first and have the company secure one. The private tours above are the place to ask.
- Staying in the village, which came with an observatory ticket. It was a lottery; applications closed on 31 October 2026 and results come out on 10 November.
- Travel-agency bus tours, no observatory ticket, with the list published on 2 December 2026 at 13:00. The Nagoya-start versions are in the Nagoya post; whichever appear on our partners show on the tours hub as they list them.
On light-up days the daytime bus car park opens at 8:00, takes its last entry at 14:00 and must be empty by 16:00. So a regular daytime visit cannot stretch into the lights, and the public Nohi bus cannot be your way in. Every date is on the events calendar; while you’re in town for it, Takayama’s own winter show is the Hirayu Waterfall ice festival in Okuhida.
Driving in winter
By car, Shirakawa-go is one expressway hop west of Takayama; the bus takes about 50 minutes on the same road, so a car doesn’t save time. It saves fuss with children and luggage, and it unlocks Gokayama. The village-run Seseragi Park car park, about 200 cars, is the one to use: ¥2,000 per car since 1 October 2025 (it was ¥1,000; the village raised it for upkeep and crowding, with a further surcharge planned for Golden Week and Obon), open 8:00 to 17:00 with the last entry at 16:30, and the Midashima and Terao lots take the overflow. From the car park you cross the Deai bridge into Ogimachi on foot.
Rental desks at Takayama Station fit snow tyres from December to March; the offices, their pick-up points and the paperwork you need are on the getting-around page. If you’re flying into Chubu Centrair and driving up, compare suppliers on DiscoverCars at Chubu Centrair. The village lanes are for walking, and on a light-up night no car gets in without a reserved slot and studless tyres.
What you’ll see in two to four hours

Ogimachi is the main village of Shirakawa-go, inscribed by UNESCO in 1995 together with Gokayama as the Historic Villages of Shirakawa-go and Gokayama. From the bus terminal everything is on foot: the main street with its shops and cafés, the big gassho houses that open as museums (Wada House is the best known), the Minka-en open-air museum across the river, and the Shiroyama observatory above the village, which is the postcard view, reached by the village shuttle bus or on foot. Two hours covers the street and the observatory; four lets you go inside a house, eat and sit by the river. This site is about Takayama, so we stop there: the village’s own association publishes the current house hours and shuttle times.

- Two villages, no car: the Nohi sightseeing bus, direct from Nohi or on Klook or KKday; for a walking guide, GetYourGuide’s guided day.
- The light-up: Nohi’s web-only seats, a car slot on 1 December, or the agency list on 2 December, with the dates on the events calendar.
- Everyone else: the ¥2,800 Nohi bus, booked a month ahead, and a bed in Takayama from the stay hub, Takayama on Agoda or Takayama on Booking.com.
