Takayama and Shirakawa-go Tour from Nagoya: Charter or Coach

By Takayama Gifu Team · Updated · 13 min read

Ogimachi in Shirakawa-go from above in early April: gassho farmhouses, bare rice fields and snow-streaked mountains

A Shirakawa-go tour from Nagoya almost always bundles Takayama, and that is the right pairing: the gassho-zukuri village and the old merchant town sit 50 minutes apart by bus, two and a half to three hours north of Nagoya. The question is how to do it. A private charter gives a family or a group of four to nine the day on their own clock; a coach tour is the cheapest way to see both; the public bus and the Limited Express Hida let you build the same loop yourself for a little over ¥10,000. This page sets the three side by side with the fares and timetables we checked on 4 November 2026, explains the reservation-only rules of the January 2027 Shirakawa-go light-up, and ends with the option the tour sellers never mention: sleeping one night in Takayama.

Quick answer

Private charter Coach day tour Do it yourself
Cost Per car, split by the group; 10-hour blocks are the norm (check today’s price on the product page) Per person, the cheapest option (check today’s price) About ¥12,500 to ¥13,600 with the Hida back, about ¥9,700 to ¥10,800 with the bus back
Day Hotel pick-up in Nagoya, about 10 hours Nagoya Station or the Meitetsu Bus Center around 8:00 to 8:30, back after dark First bus 7:50, back around 20:00
Time on the ground You decide; 3 hours in each is realistic Roughly 1.5 to 2 hours in each place, less when Gujo Hachiman is added About 2.5 hours in Shirakawa-go and 3 in Takayama
Best for Families, groups of 4 to 9, winter, anyone with luggage or a slow walker Solo travellers and couples on a budget Confident travellers who want more time and don’t mind a 7:50 start
Weak point Price for one or two people Fixed route, short stops, 40-odd fellow passengers Reservation-only buses in peak weeks; you carry your own bags

Private charters from Nagoya

The charter products sold from Nagoya follow one pattern: a car or minibus with a driver, picked up at your Nagoya hotel, for a block of about 10 hours, priced per vehicle rather than per person. Takayama, Shirakawa-go and often Gero Onsen are the standard loop, and the sellers let you reorder it or swap a stop. On a per-car price, a group of six pays roughly the same as a couple, which is why charters are the first thing we’d book for a family or a group of friends. Three things to confirm before paying: the vehicle size (6-, 9- and 13-seat vans are the usual choices, and luggage space differs sharply between them), the driver’s language (most Nagoya charters offer Japanese or Chinese; English-speaking drivers or a separate guide cost more), and the overtime rate for an eleventh hour. Entrance fees, parking, expressway tolls and lunch are usually not in the car price; read the inclusions line.

Partner product pages change their prices by date and group size, so we print none here; the live page shows today’s figure.

Coach day tours compared

The coach tours are the volume product: a full-size bus from Nagoya, a guide who speaks English, Chinese and Japanese (Korean on some), two or three stops, and a return after dark. The listings are honest if you read them: a day of ten to eleven hours buys roughly an hour and a half to two hours in Takayama and about the same in Shirakawa-go, because five to six of those hours are on the expressway. The differences that matter:

  • Route order. Most go Takayama first and Shirakawa-go second, which puts the village in afternoon light and the lunch stop in Takayama, where the Hida beef is.
  • The observation deck. The classic photograph of Ogimachi (the hero image above) is from the Shiroyama viewpoint above the village. Some coaches drive up to it, some leave you to climb or take the village shuttle in your free time. KKday’s Hida Takayama and Shirakawa-go day tour from Nagoya writes the deck visit into the itinerary and offers English, Japanese, Korean and Chinese guiding.
  • Gujo Hachiman. GetYourGuide’s Gujo, Hida Takayama and Shirakawa-go day tour from Nagoya adds the castle town on the Nagara river, which is on the way. Its listing describes about an hour there, about two hours in Takayama and under two in Shirakawa-go; three stops in one day is a lot of bus.
  • Lunch. Rarely included. Takayama’s free time is the meal; our must-eat hub covers what to look for.
  • Daily departures. Klook’s Takayama and Shirakawa-go day tour from Nagoya runs every day with the three guide languages.

Meeting points are at Nagoya Station or the Meitetsu Bus Center and vary by product; the voucher names the exact spot. Compare the same coach on two partners on the day you book: the operator is often identical and the price is not.

Winter and the 2027 Shirakawa-go light-up

The village under snow is the picture most people are chasing, and from December to March the day works, and the timetable even helps: the Gifu Bus 8:20 departure and the 16:30 return from Shirakawa-go are suspended from April to November, so they run only from December to March, one extra bus each way in winter (below). Charters and coaches run all winter; ask a charter company whether the vehicle has winter tyres, and note that for the light-up the organiser requires studless tyres on every car.

The light-up is a different animal. The 41st Shirakawa-go Light-up runs on four evenings in 2027: Monday 11 January (a public holiday), and Sundays 17, 24 and 31 January, 17:30 to 19:30. The organiser, the light-up committee inside the Shirakawa-go Tourist Association, states that it is entirely reservation-based and that visitors who turn up without one are not admitted. There are five ways in:

  1. Staying overnight in the village, which comes with an observation-deck ticket. It was a lottery: applications ran 1 to 31 October 2026, with results on 10 November.
  2. Your own car with a reserved parking slot at the Midashima car park, no deck ticket. The first round sold out; the second opens 1 December 2026 at 13:00, first come first served, ¥7,000 per vehicle for 1 to 5 people and ¥10,000 for 6 to 10.
  3. A taxi or charter with a reserved parking slot, same process as the car. This is how a Nagoya charter gets in: your driver needs the slot, so book the charter before 1 December and have the company secure one.
  4. The five highway-bus operators’ light-up services: Nohi, Kaetsuno, Toyama Chitetsu, Hokutetsu and Iruka Kotsu, with sales that opened between 13 October and 2 November 2026 depending on the date. None of them is the Nagoya line.
  5. Travel-agency bus tours, no deck ticket, with the list published on 2 December 2026 at 13:00. The Nagoya-departure light-up coaches sold on our partners belong here; they appear on the tours hub as the partners list them, and the dates sit on the events calendar.

On light-up days the daytime bus car park opens at 8:00, takes its last entry at 14:00 and must be empty by 16:00, so a normal coach tour cannot stay for the lights.

Doing it yourself by bus and train

The public loop is Nagoya to Shirakawa-go by highway bus, Shirakawa-go to Takayama by the Nohi bus, and Takayama back to Nagoya by train or bus. Every leg checked against the operators’ own pages:

Leg Operator Time Adult fare Booking
Meitetsu Bus Center (Nagoya) to Shirakawa-go Gifu Bus, Meitetsu Bus and Hokutetsu jointly 2 h 42 min ¥3,600 to ¥4,700 by date Reserved seats, reservation priority: highwaybus.com or 058-201-0489
Shirakawa-go to Takayama Nohi Bus Center Nohi Bus about 50 min ¥2,800 16 round trips a day; some buses reservation-only
Takayama to Nagoya, train JR Central Limited Express Hida 2 h 30 min ¥6,140 reserved JR Central online; non-reserved cars exist except 25 December 2026 to 5 January 2027
Takayama to Meitetsu Bus Center, bus Nohi, Meitetsu and JR Tokai 2 h 45 min ¥3,600 (¥3,300 web) 12 a day, all seats reserved, up to a month ahead

The Nagoya buses leave from bay 7 on the third floor of the Meitetsu Bus Center, in the Meitetsu department store’s men’s building beside Meitetsu Nagoya station. The timetable in force since 1 October 2025 has departures at 7:50, 8:20 (December to March only), 8:50, 9:20, 9:50 and 15:00, reaching Shirakawa-go at 10:32, 11:02, 11:32, 12:02, 12:40 and 17:55. Returns to Nagoya leave Shirakawa-go at 9:25, 14:30, 15:30, 15:55, 16:30 (December to March only) and 17:15, the last arriving at 20:00. The fare moves with the calendar in five bands from ¥3,600 to ¥4,700, so a weekday in June is cheaper than a Saturday in the snow.

A workable day: the 7:50 bus, two and a half hours in Ogimachi, a Nohi bus to Takayama around 13:00, three hours in the old town, and the Hida home. That is more village time than any coach gives you, for the price of carrying your own bag and booking three tickets. The getting-here page has the rail passes, including the one that covers the Hida and the Shirakawa-go buses together; the getting-around page has the bus centre’s bays.

Day trip or one night in Takayama?

Here is the honest arithmetic. Any Nagoya day, charter or coach or bus, spends five to six hours on the road and gives Takayama two or three. Takayama is a town for the morning: the Miyagawa and Jinya-mae morning markets, the Sanmachi streets before the day-trippers arrive at eleven, a sake brewery with its cedar ball hung out. A coach reaches Sanmachi at the busiest hour and leaves before the light goes soft. Sleep there once and the sums change: the Hida up from Nagoya in the afternoon, an evening in the old town, the markets at eight, the 16-a-day Nohi bus to Shirakawa-go for a late morning in the village, and the Gifu Bus 15:30 or 15:55 straight back to Nagoya from there. Two destinations, no backtracking, and a ryokan dinner in between.

Sanmachi is the Takayama Sanmachi Traditional Buildings Preservation District, about 4.4 hectares of Kami-Sannomachi, Kami-Ninomachi and the streets around them, protected nationally since 1979. It is a kilometre east of the station and the bus centre, a 15-minute walk.

The stay hub sorts Takayama’s ryokan and hotels by area; for a live search, try Takayama on Agoda or Takayama on Booking.com. If your dates touch the spring festival on 14 and 15 April or the autumn festival on 9 and 10 October, book the room before the tour: those two weekends fill the town. Lockers and luggage forwarding for a one-bag overnight are on the luggage page.

Book the trip

  1. A group of four or more: a per-car charter, KKday’s 10-hour Nagoya charter or Klook’s private car with guide, with the vehicle size and driver language confirmed.
  2. One or two people on a budget: Klook’s daily Takayama and Shirakawa-go coach, or GetYourGuide’s version with Gujo Hachiman if you want three stops.
  3. More time in both places: the bus and train loop above, or a night in Takayama booked on Agoda or Booking.com; the passes that make it cheaper are on the getting-here page.
  4. The January light-up: reserve by 1 December through one of the five routes above, or plan the Takayama night and watch the events calendar.

FAQ

Can I see Takayama and Shirakawa-go from Nagoya in one day? Yes, by charter, coach or the bus and train loop. Expect five to six hours of travel and two to three hours in each place; the public loop gives the most time on the ground.

How far is Shirakawa-go from Nagoya? 2 h 42 min by the Gifu Bus highway bus from the Meitetsu Bus Center, ¥3,600 to ¥4,700 one way depending on the date, five departures a day, six from December to March.

Is a private charter worth it? For four or more people, usually: the price is per car for about 10 hours, the day runs on your schedule, and the car waits with your luggage. For one or two, a coach or the public bus costs far less.

Do coach tours include lunch? Rarely. The Takayama stop is the meal break.

Can a day tour from Nagoya see the 2027 light-up? Only a travel-agency tour registered with the organiser (listed from 2 December 2026) or a charter with a reserved parking slot. Ordinary day visitors must leave the bus car park by 16:00, and nobody is admitted without a reservation.

Should I stay the night in Takayama instead? If you can, yes: the morning markets and empty Sanmachi streets are what the day tours miss, and from Takayama the Shirakawa-go bus is 50 minutes.
